Installing Zabbix Agent on Proxmox using Debian

Proxmox is a popular open-source virtualization platform that I have used extensively for my machines, both as virtualization servers and as part of my overall infrastructure. One of the tools I rely heavily on is Zabbix, a monitoring solution that provides me with real-time insights into my systems’ performance.

However, the Debian distribution does not come with Zabbix pre-installed by default, which means we need to take extra steps to install it. In this case, since we only need the agent, we’ll focus on installing and configuring that.

To start, we need to visit the Zabbix website to download the correct version for our system. The page for downloading Zabbix on Debian can be found at http://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/2.2/debian/pool/main/z/zabbix/.

For this installation, we only need the agent, so we’ll download the latest version of that, which was 2.2.8-1 for a 64-bit system from http://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/2.2/debian/pool/main/z/zabbix/zabbix-agent_2.2.8-1+wheezy_amd64.deb.

After downloading the agent, we’ll install it using the following steps:

cd /tmp
wget http://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/2.2/debian/pool/main/z/zabbix/zabbix-agent_2.2.8-1+wheezy_amd64.deb
dpkg -i zabbix-agent_2.2.8-1+wheezy_amd64.debCode language: Bash (bash)

Once installed, the agent will start automatically, but we need to configure it for our environment. To do this, we’ll edit the configuration file /etc/zabbix/zabbix_agentd.conf and update the following settings:

  • Server: Set this to the IP address of your Zabbix server.
  • ServerActive: This should also be set to the same value as above, but can also include the port number (e.g., 192.168.1.100:10051).
  • Hostname: Set this to the hostname or name of the machine.

After making these changes, we’ll restart the service:

/etc/init.d/zabbix-agent restartCode language: Bash (bash)

With the agent configured and running, we can now monitor our Proxmox servers in Zabbix.
